Thiên Chúa LÀ CHÚA CỦA SỰ SỐNG, CHÚNG TA HÃY TIN THEO NGÀI

Chúng ta sắp đến cuối năm phụng vụ. Bây giờ là lúc nhắc đến thời điểm cuối, không những chỉ cuối năm phụng vụ mà cả cuối năm dương lịch nữa. Trời sáng ban ngày sẽ ngắn lại vì ánh sáng mặt trời soi chiếu ít. Có nhiều sự việc giúp cho chúng ta thấy thời gian qua mau. Và đời sống chúng ta dường như thu ngắn lại, và một ngày nào chúng ta sẽ ra đi. Và rồi chuyện gì sẽ xảy đến?

Hôm nay chúng ta bắt đầu nhìn lại Thiên Chúa làm gì cho thỏ̀i gian hiện tại và cho tủỏng lai của chúng ta. Thiên Chúa sẽ có đó hay không khi chúng ta đến ngày cuối đỏ̀i, và sẽ đem chúng ta về sống trọn vẹn vỏ́i Ngài hay không? Sẽ có sụ̉ sống lại cho chúng ta hay không? Hay chúng ta lại phải nghĩ nhủ nhủ̃ng ngủỏ̀i phái Xa-đốc trong lỏ̀i họ bàn luận vỏ́i Chúa Giêsu hôm nay? Phái Xa-đốc không tin ỏ̉ sụ̉ sống lại, và họ nói một thí dụ về 7 ngủỏ̀i anh em cùng kết hôn với một người phụ nữ và để cho thấy là họ không chấp nhận tín điều lạ lùng đó.

Phái Xa-đốc bàn cãi về luật củỏ́i hỏi của ngủỏ̀i Lêvi (Đnl 25: 5-10) quy kết là nếu một ngủỏ̀i nam đã lập gia đình khi chết không có con nối dỏi thi cũng sẽ có đủọ̉c ngủỏ̀i thủ̀a kế. Ngủỏ̀i Xa-đốc muốn chủ́ng tỏ là không thể có sụ̉ sống lại qua thí dụ họ đủa ra là một ngủỏ̀i nam lấy vọ̉ rồi không có con, rồi tiếp tục các ngủỏ̀i em khác, không một ai có con, rồi bà vọ̉ cũng chết. Ngủỏ̀i Xa-đốc nghĩ rằng họ đưa thí dụ để chứng minh rằng không có sụ̉ sống lại và cho là tín điều về sụ̉ sống lại là điều ngu xuẫn. "Vậy, trong ngày sống lại, ngủỏ̀i phụ nữ ấy là vọ̉ ai?"

Tôi là ngủỏ̀i thỏ̀i nay, và lỏ̀i bàn cãI của ngủỏ̀i Xa-đốc cũng vậy. Dụ̉a vào sách Đệ Nhị Luật, không ai có thể dùng lỏ̀i dạy đó để phủ nhận tín điều về sụ̉ sống lại. Tôi có thí dụ của tôi về lỏ̀i bàn cãi đó: Nếu có đỏ̀i sống ngày sau thì chúng ta sống ỏ̉ đâu? Sống trên trái đất này hay sao? Trái đất này sẽ có đủ chỗ cho tất cả mọi ngủỏ̀i hay không? Chúng ta sẽ sống trong nhà có vủỏ̀n đẹp hay không? Ai sẽ trồng hoa theo phong thái nàoAi sẽ làm cỏ? Ai sẽ hút bụi đồ nội thất? Về lủỏng thụ̉c, chúng ta cần phải ăn uống hay không? Ai sẽ nấu ăn? Ai sẽ rủ̉a dọn và sắp đặt chén bát? Ngày sẽ có đủ 24 tiếng đồng hồ hay không? Và nếu có bóng tối thi có đèn điện hay không? Và nếu có bong tối, chúng ta có cần đèn điện để soi sáng đủỏ̀ng sá và ban đêm hay không? Và ai sẽ thay các bóng đèn khi bóng bị hư? Tất cả mọi việc ai sẽ làm? Nhủ̃ng câu hỏi này và bao nhiêu câu hỏi khác làm tôi quẩn trí. Nếu tôi là một ngủỏ̀i Xa-đốc thỏ̀i nay, thì đó là nhủ̃ng điểm chính tôi sẽ hỏi Chúa Giêsu để minh hoạ cho tín điều ngu xuẫn về sụ̉ sống lại. Còn bạn, bạn sẽ trả lỏ̀i sao?

Chúa Giêsu sẽ trả lỏ̀i ngủỏ̀i Xa-đốc bằng cách dùng hình bụi gai cháy trong sách Xuất Hành (Xh 3: 1-6) và lỏ̀i Thiên Chúa nói vỏ́i ông Môsê. Trong câu chuyện đó, Thiên Chúa dùng thì hiện tại "Ta là Ta". Thiên Chúa không phải là Chúa của quá khủ́ nhủng là Chúa của các tổ phụ dân Israel đang sống, là Chúa của ngủỏ̀i sống, của Abraham, Isaac và Jacob. Giao ủỏ́c Thiên Chúa làm vỏ́i các tổ phụ vẫn còn có hiệu lực. Các tổ phụ đang sống và sống vỏ́i Thiên Chúa, mặc dù họ đã qua đỏ̀i.

Thiên Chúa làm giao ủỏ́c vỏ́i ngủỏ̀i Do thái, mà sụ̉ chết không thể hũy bỏ đủọ̉c. Ai biết đủọ̉c đỏ̀i sống ngày sau nhủ thế nào ai biết đủọ̉c bàn ghế trong nhà Chúa sắp đặt ra sao? Chúa Giêsu cam đoan vỏ́i chúng ta là tín điều ngủỏ̀i Do thái tuyên xủng về sụ̉ chết là sụ̉ thật: Chúng ta ỏ̉ trong bàn tay của Thiên Chúa, và ngay cả sụ̉ chết cũng không thể làm Thiên Chúa buông thả chúng ta. Thật vậy, sụ̉ chết còn làm chúng ta liên hệ chặt chẽ vỏ́i Thiên Chúa hỏn.

Câu chuyện của 7 anh em Macabê và bà mẹ họ chủ́ng tỏ điều đó. Các anh em Macabê bị bắt và bị hành xủ̉ đến chết. Một trong các ngủỏ̀i con nói vỏ́i ngủỏ̀i hành xủ̉ "Thà qua đỏ̀i do tay ngủỏ̀i phàm, trong sụ̉ ngóng đọ̉i hy vọng Thiên Chúa ban là đủọ̉c Ngủỏ̀i làm cho sống lại. Vì phục sinh hằng sống không phải là phần của ông". 7 anh em chết tin là họ sẽ sống vỏ́i Thiên Chúa muôn đỏ̀i, và người mẹ đã khuyến khích họ giử vững đức tin trước sụ̉ chết.

Có ngủỏ̀i tin là có sụ̉ khác biệt giủ̃a đỏ̀i sống này và đỏ̀i sống ngày sau. Nhủng Chúa Giêsu trả lỏ̀i vỏ́i ngủỏ̀i Xa-đốc là đỏ̀i sống lại sẽ không khác đỏ̀i sống này. Bây giỏ̀ có đỏ̀i sống và cũng có đỏ̀i sống ngày sau Nếu sụ̉ thật là thế, thi đỏ̀i sống bây giỏ̀ phản ảnh đỏ̀i sống ngày sau. Trong đỏ̀i sống ngày sau sẽ không có việc củỏ́i vọ̉ lấy chồng, nhủng sẽ có sụ̉ viên mãn giống như đỏ̀i sống bây giỏ̀. Chúng ta sẽ sống mật thiết vỏ́i Thiên Chúa bây giỏ̀, và đang ngóng đọ̉i hy vọng và tin tủỏ̉ng sẽ đủọ̉c nhủ thế, và đủọ̉c hoàn tất trong đỏ̀i sống ngày sau. Trong khi chúng ta cố gắng giử vững đủ́c tin và đủ́c cậy trong đỏ̀i sống bây giỏ̀ và phó thác mọi sụ̉ trong bàn tay nhân lành của Thiên Chúa hằng sống, chúng ta sẽ không phải thất vọng ngay bây giỏ̀ và trong đỏ̀i sống ngày sau.

Thiên Chúa cho Chúa Giêsu sống lại tủ̀ cỏi chết, và cho Ngài đỏ̀i sống mỏ́i vinh quang. Sụ̉ phục sinh của Chúa Giêsu là một đỏ̀i sống khác liên hệ vỏ́i đỏ̀i sống trên mặt đất này nhủng hoàn toàn khác hẵn. Thảo nào các môn đệ gặp Chúa Giêsu phục sinh cố gắng mô tả lại kinh nghiệm của họ. Tuy nhiên họ vẫn tin vào sụ̉ sống lại, và cũng nhủ chúng ta luôn hy vọng vào sụ̉ sống lại của mình.

Tất cả chúng ta đều có ngủỏ̀i thân thủỏng đã qua đỏ̀i. Và khi nghĩ đến nhủ̃ng ngủỏ̀i đó thật là một điều đau xót. Nhủng, trong khi chúng ta nghĩ đến sụ̉ chết của họ và của chúng ta, chúng ta có thể tìm sụ̉ an ủi trong đủ́c tin, nhỏ́ lại lỏ̀i Chúa Giêsu nói hôm nay: Thiên Chúa của chúng ta là Thiên Chúa của kẻ sống. Chúng ta sống trong hy vọng vào lỏ̀i Chúa Giêsu dạy hôm nay: Thiên Chúa sẽ củ́u ngủỏ̀i thân thủỏng của chúng ta ra khỏi bóng tối của sụ̉ chết, và sẽ dẫn đủa họ đến ánh sáng của Chúa Kitô phục sinh.

Vì Chúa Giêsu, chúng ta tin vào sụ̉ sống lại của kẻ chết và Thiên Chúa đã tạo dụ̉ng chúng ta, không phải để chết, mà để sống. Qua Chúa Giêsu, Thiên Chúa sẫn sàng chịu khổ hình của sụ̉ chết của loài ngủỏ̀i để cho chúng ta hy vọng mạnh mẽ hỏn. Sụ̉ chết đã ḅi đánh bại, và tội lỗi không còn phải chiếm đoạt đỏ̀i sống của chúng ta. Chúng ta có thể không biết cảnh sống ngày sau, nhủng điều chúng ta có là hy vọng lỏ̀i Thiên Chúa hủ́a vỏ́i chúng ta là Ngài sẽ củ́u chúng ta ra khỏi đêm tối của sụ̉ chết, và sẽ dẫn đủa chúng ta vào ánh sáng của Chúa Kitô. Và đó là đủ́c tin của chúng ta vào Thiên Chúa hằng sống của các tổ phụ chúng ta và của Chúa Giêsu Kitô.

We are coming quickly to the end of the liturgical year. At this time we are reminded of endings, not just the close of the liturgical year, but soon the ending of the calendar year. The days grow shorter, there is less daylight. There is a lot that contributes to our sense of how rapidly time passes, our lives seem short and someday we will die. And then what?

Today we begin to look at what God is doing about our present and our future. Will God be there at the closing of our days to catch us and take us into full life with God? Will there be a resurrection for us, or should we resign ourselves to the Sadducees’ position, exemplified in their argument with Jesus today? They didn’t believe in the resurrection and their example of the seven brothers marrying the same woman attempted to disprove what they considered absurd.

The Sadducees based their argument on the law of levirate marriage (Dt 25:5-10), that was a safeguard to guarantee that a married man who died childless would have heirs. The Sadducees’ attempted to prove the impossibility of the resurrection by proposing the extreme example of the seven brothers who were married to the same woman and died childless. They thought they disproved the possibility of the resurrection by showing how foolish such a belief is. "Now at the resurrection whose wife will she be?"

I am a modern person and so the Sadducees’ argument, based on the teaching from Deuteronomy, is not one I would use in an attempt to disprove belief in the resurrection. I would have my own examples of what makes the resurrection seem foolish and impossible. Here’s my argument. If there is a next life where will we live? Here on earth? Will there be room for all the people who ever lived? Will we live in houses with lovely gardens? Who will plant the flowers and tend to them? Who will do the weeding? Will we need to dust the furniture? What about food, will we need to eat and drink? Who will prepare the meals? Who will wash the dishes and put them away? Will there be 24 hours in the day? And if there is darkness will we need electricity to light the streetlamps at night? Will there be streetlamps? Who will replace the bulbs when they need replacing? Who will do all that? These questions and many many more like them boggle my mind! If I were a modern Sadducee these would be some of the points I would post to Jesus to illustrate the absurdity of believing in the resurrection of the dead. How would you respond?

He would likely start with the argument he posed to the Sadducees. Jesus used the narrative of the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) and the dialogue between God and Moses. In the encounter God says, "I am" – referring to the present. God is not the God of past events, but is the God of Israel’s ancestors who are alive, the God of the living, of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The covenant God made with them is still in effect. They are alive and share life with God now, though they have died.

God initiated a covenant with the Jews, which death cannot destroy. Who knows what the next life will be like, or the furniture arrangements in the house of God? Jesus assures us is that what the Jewish people believed is true: we are in the hands of the living God and even death will not cause God to let go of us. Indeed, death will make our ties to God even stronger.

The story of the Maccabee brothers and their mother affirms this. The brothers were arrested and tortured to death. One of them said to his tormentors, "It is my choice to die at the hands of man with the hope God gives of being raised up by him, but for you there will be no resurrection from the dead." The dying brothers believed they would live with God for all eternity and their mother encouraged them in their faith.

Some believe there is a complete difference between this life and the next. But Jesus’ response to the Sadducees and later the resurrection accounts, suggest there is no discontinuity between this life in the next. There is just life, in time now and in eternity later. If that’s so, how we live now is just a foretaste of how we will always live. They may not be marriage in the afterlife, but there will be a blossoming completion of what has begun in this life. Our openness to God now and are living in hope and trust will find their affirmation and completion in the next life. As we struggle in our faith and hope in this life and cast ourselves into the arms of the living God, we will not be disappointed here or in the next life.

God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him a new and glorious life. His resurrected life was a transformed life that was connected to his earthly life, but still profoundly different. No wonder when the disciples encountered the risen Christ they struggled to describe their experience. Still, they believed in the resurrection and like us hoped in their own resurrection.

We have all lost loved ones and it is hard to call them to mind without feeling pain in our loss. But as we face their death and our own we can find comfort and support in our faith, recalling what Jesus says to us today: Our God is the God of the living. We live in the hope Jesus’ words give us: that God will rescue from the darkness of death our loved ones and with them, will lead us into the light of the risen Christ.

Because of Jesus we believe in the resurrection of the dead and that God has created us, not for death, but for life. In Jesus, God was willing to suffer our human death to strengthen our hope. Death has been overcome and sin need not dominate our lives. We may not have the blueprints for the arrangements of the furnishings in the next life, but what we have is the hope of God’s promise to us that God will rescue us from the darkness of death and lead us into the light of Christ. Such is our faith in the living God of our ancestors and of Jesus Christ.
